Evening Star Block and a FINISHED Project!

Here is my September Evening Star block.
I actually finished something! (I have a lot of quilt pieces, but not so many actual quilts). The table runner is for our Guild bus trip challenge- if we finished a project bought on our July trip to Wisconsin before our fall trip (Oct. 24), we can enter our name for a prize drawing. I bought the pattern-Summer Fans table runner at Life's A Stitch Quilt Shoppe in Janesville, WI and about half the fabric on the trip. It was finished about the time of the Autumnal Equinox, so I named mine "Mabon Fans". I'll take it for show & tell to the evening group guild meeting next Monday.

Happy Summer Solstice

Here is my "nickel quilt" in progress, started in Pat Speth's class 0n May 29, 2009.
I changed her "Texas Two Step" pattern by changing the half-square triangles in the shoo-fly blocks to four-patches. I'll call it "Summer Solstice Dance"; it is almost finished at the summer solstice- my goal is to have the top done for show-and-tell at this Wednesday's guild meeting.

T and I went to our church picnic today at a member's property in the country- she has beautiful English perennial beds. It was HOT and humid, -the Solstice was celebrated by eating potluck, touring their place and sitting and talking- thunder was rumbling so we didn't do our drumming and ritual.

Applique Affair

I finished my third block, by needle-turning with the "Piece O Cake" method.
I tried glue over freezer paper and starch ironed over freezer paper to prepare the pieces but the glue is too much mess and the ironing too tedious. I like my pieces prepared but don't like to do the preparing! So I'll continue with needle turn and am getting faster and more accurate with practice.

It's been a long time since my last blog post, and this is the reason why - the raffle quilt for the guild that I was in charge of this year! The past month or so I have been focused on getting it done, hand quilted. I've had guild members at my house to work on it 2 or 3 times a week and I've worked on it most evenings. The show was March 27 and 28; the raffle ticket sales brought in over $2900!! I'll be posting more regularly now, I've a lot to catch up on.

Lincoln and Darwin 200th Birthdays

February 12, 1809 Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin were born. Both men who made and changed history. A couple of week's ago the speaker at church discussed them and recommended a Newsweek article and the book Rebel Giants.
This quilt was made from the brown jelly roll strips that I won at the guild's drawing in November. I didn't know what to do with them until I saw this pattern and thought the brown strips resembled a log cabin and Lincoln would be in the center. Our quilt show theme this year is "Quilting Our Heritage - The Lincoln Legacy". There is a special category on Lincoln/Civil War/Illinois quilts, so that is where it will go.

On Wednesday, I hosted my women's book group meeting. The book we discussed was The Emancipator's Wife by Barbara Hambley. An historical novel about Mary Todd Lincoln which was rich with detail that revealed what life was like for women in that era, as well as her personal problems and sufferings.

Illinois Sampler

All twelve blocks from the DQG Evening Groups 2008 block of the month project are completed. Here are three of my favorite ones and all 12 on my design wall. I have been thinking about different settings, and have decided to do a garden maze setting as I saw in Elm Creek Quilts by Jennifer Chiaverini. That's what she did with her sampler quilt. Now to get it done and quilted for the QuiltFest March 27 and 28?

"Brigid's Fire"s
I made this wallhanging in a class with teacher Sharyn Craig in 2006, I finished it in February, so I named it for Brigid. It is an old pattern called Royal Cross. I hung it in my hall this week in honor of Brigid/Candlemas/Ground Hog's Day.

Dear Jane Block

K-5 "Passing Through"
This is the 28th block I've completed (not counting the 2 I did at 6 inches in the beginning, and one triangle.) I made a four patch and then appliqued the diamonds onto the light squares

Evening Group Quilt Guild meeting

Monday night's meeting was a party to celebrate the finishing of our Illinois Sampler Quilt. I have all the blocks done and pinned them to the fabric that I'm thinking of using for sashing, and showed it for Show and Tell. Several ladies had their quilts done; it's fun to see how different they are with various fabric choices.
Our speaker was from Main Street Quilt Company of Shelbyville, she made it up before the big snow storm hit.
I bought a delicious 1800's browns and pinks kit.
